PROGRAM: 11:00 am The Bartrams: The First Family of Botany and their NC History
SPEAKER: Karen Cope Dawsey, GCNC
Karen Cope Dawsey is a GCNC member with a love for history. She learned about William and John Bartram’s connection to Bladen Co., NC and has researched their history and connection to NC. She’ll share the fascinating story of the Bartrams with us.
John Bartram, an early Anglo-American, who was born in Darby, PA in 1699, is sometimes called the “Father of American Botany”. He was one of the first practicing Linnaean botanists to travel extensively in the eastern American colonies in order to study and collect plants. John Bartram and his son, William, were colonial botanists, horticulturalists, artists and explorers connected to North Carolina. Their contributions to the science of botany and horticulture are considered “monumental”. Learn more before the program at this website:docsouth.unc.edu/nc/bartram/bio.html.
