The Raleigh Garden Club

Decoration of the North Carolina State Capitol
In what has become an established tradition, the Christmas
season is made special when the Raleigh Garden Club
decorates the offices and doors of the North Carolina State
Capitol Building. Members participate in the event by
gathering greenery and other plant material to create
garlands for the stairwells and the rotunda as well as create
beautiful door, mantel, and table arrangements. In addition,
we decorate a Christmas tree outside the Governor’s office.
Plant Sale
Members of the Club, especially those in the Horticulture
Study Group, organize a plant sale held each spring at the
State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. In the fall and spring,
members pot up seedlings and divisions of plants from
their own gardens for the sale, and donations are requested
of members so that plants can be purchased from
commercial growers for resale. In just a few years, the
number of plants sold has increased four-fold and the plant
sale has become a major fund raiser. In addition to the
profits generated for Raleigh Garden Club projects, the sale
has resulted in drawing many new members to the Club.
N.C. State Fair Garden (click to view photos)
For years now, The Raleigh Garden Club has been the
recipient of Blue Ribbons at the State Fair for designing a
competition garden. This year’s theme is A WINTER
INTEREST GARDEN, a garden ready for an early snowfall
featuring plants, shrubs, and trees with distinctive form,
bark, twigs, and fruit. The garden not only demonstrates to
the public attractive plants which can be used in their own
gardens, but it displays the horticultural and design talents
of our members and yields publicity and prize money for the
Club.
Garden Therapy
The garden therapy program meets about once a month to
provide a planned activity. Members sign up at the general
meeting, and help participants in making tussie-mussies,
pressed flowers, potting annuals and fresh flower arranging.
Floral Design
Classes are free to members, and teach both beginning
and more advanced designs.
